Pilates grip socks all look similar in a product photo. On the reformer they do not feel similar at all. These are the five things that make the difference.
1. The grip pattern
Full-sole grips feel secure but can make the sock stiff and sticky when you want to slide your foot into position. The best patterns concentrate grip under the ball of the foot and the heel, and keep the arch free so the foot can move naturally.
2. The fit
If a sock turns on your foot, the grips turn with it. Look for a sock that sits close to the foot, with a ribbed cuff that stays up. One-size socks work well when the size range is honest, so check the EU sizes before you buy.
3. The fabric
Cotton blends are soft, breathable and comfortable for a full class. Very thin synthetic socks can feel slippery inside the sock itself, even if the grips hold.
4. Cuff height
Low-cut socks can slip down under your heel during footwork. A crew or quarter cuff stays in place and keeps the heel of the sock where it belongs. It also looks better with leggings.
5. Grip durability
Silicone grips last longer than printed rubber dots, as long as you wash the socks inside out at a low temperature and let them air dry. The dryer and the iron are what destroy grips. Read our guide to washing grip socks for the details.
Bonus: pick a pair you like looking at
You will see your feet a lot in pilates. That is why every balanced. pair has silicone grips shaped like little flowers, in four colours: green, pink, brown and cream.
