Do you need grip socks for reformer pilates?

Booked your first reformer class and the studio email says "grip socks required"? You are not alone in wondering why. Here is what grip socks actually do on a reformer, and how to pick a pair.

Why studios ask for grip socks

Most reformer studios require or strongly recommend grip socks, for three simple reasons.

  • Traction. The footbar, the carriage and the platform are smooth surfaces. Bare feet can slide, especially once you warm up, and regular socks are even worse. Silicone grips keep your feet where you put them during footwork, lunges and standing exercises.
  • Hygiene. Reformers are shared equipment. Socks keep sweat off the footbar and the straps, which is why many studios ask for them even in mat classes.
  • Confidence. When you are not worried about slipping, you can focus on alignment and breathing instead of your feet.

Can you do reformer pilates barefoot?

Some studios allow it, and some teachers like the feedback of bare feet. But if your studio asks for grip socks, you will usually be asked to buy a pair at the front desk before class. Bringing your own is cheaper and more comfortable.

What to look for in pilates grip socks

  1. Grip where you need it. The ball of the foot and the heel do most of the work on a reformer. Grips concentrated there give you traction without making the sock stiff.
  2. A snug fit. A sock that twists or bunches on your foot moves the grips out of place. Look for a ribbed cuff and a fit that sits close to the foot.
  3. Breathable fabric. A cotton blend feels soft and handles a sweaty class better than thin synthetic socks.
  4. Grips that last. Silicone grips hold up well if you wash them gently. Printed rubber that cracks after a few washes will not.

Our take

We designed balanced. grip socks for exactly this. The silicone grips are shaped like little flowers and clustered under the ball of the foot and the heel, the two spots that slide on a reformer. The body is a soft cotton blend with a ribbed crew cuff, one size EU 36-41.

Short version: if your studio asks for grip socks, get a pair you actually like wearing. You will be wearing them a lot.
